For 24 years, Larry B. Johnson has watched students drive past his business, rushing to and from classes on PJC's Pensacola campus. Johnson's self-storage business, Airport Mini Warehouses, is located directly across the street from the north entrance to PJC, on Underwood Drive.

Fanning the flames of Flamenco

Come learn Flamenco, a vivid and passionate Spanish dance form that stirs the blood and lets spirits soar. The Pensacola Junior College Continuing Education dance class is 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturdays, May 24-July 26, at the Pensacola campus. Cost is $50 per student.

Auditions are open to recent high school graduates and students in grades 9-12. For the 2008-2009 school year for Pensacola Junior College's Summer High School Onstage Workshop. The 2008 production is "The Wizard of Oz." Auditions are 8 a.m. to noon Monday and Tuesday, June 23-24, at the Ashmore Fine Arts Auditorium, Building 8, on the Pensacola campus.

Student Activities wants your beads!

PJC's Student Leadership & Activities along with the Student Government Association are collecting Mardi-Gras beads for the ARC-Gateway Center. The ARC-Gateway Center provides services for people with developmental disabilities. Frank Wilson of the ARC Center is asking for gently used Mardi-Gras beads to be recycled and then used in local Mardi-Gras parades.

United Way wants your help!

Are you bored? Do you have extra time on your hands? Do you like to help people? If you answered "yes" to any of those questions, then the United Way is perfect for you! First Call for Help is a service of the United Way of Escambia County. The focus is to provide health and human service agency information during emergency situations to the public via both a call center and Web site, said Anika Tower, First Call for Help volunteer coordinator.

The college broke ground last week for the new Edward M. Chadbourne Library, as part of a renovation project for the Learning Resources Center. The LRC will temporarily move in May to the student center in building 5 during the renovations, expected to be completed by August 2009.

Classrooms have too much exposure to the outside, some say
In the wake of campus shootings in Illinois and Virginia, faculty and staff in building 1 have adopted some security measures. Signs displaying the phone numbers of police have been posted throughout the building, and the college is working on a text-messaging warning system.

Art students honored in annual ceremony

Students of various studio classes at the Anna Lamar Switzer Center for Visual Arts were honored recently with an enormous assortment of awards and scholarships for the work that they have produced in the last year. In addition to having their best work put on display in the gallery at building 15 for the Student Honors Exhibit, a total of $348,000 was awarded to students during an annual award ceremony last Friday April 25.

22-year-old student dies in crash; updated with service information

A current PJC student died from injuries in a single car crash Tuesday morning. Rufus Blue, 22, was driving a 1993 Saturn at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the car, ran off the road and struck a tree. The crash occurred near Office Woods Drive, 500 feet south of College Boulevard on 12th avenue.

Erudite taggers post prose
On Monday, April 28, the maintenance team at the PJC Pensacola campus worked diligently to remove graffiti from brick on the exterior of the Ashmore Auditorium. Vandals apparently struck during the weekend, spray painting graffiti high on the west and north walls of the building.
